Subsidiarity

Subsidiarity is the principle of social teaching that holds that matters should be handled by the smallest, lowest, or least centralized competent authority.

Subsidiarity is the principle of Catholic social teaching that states a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, but rather should support it in case of need (CCC 1883, 1885).

Protection of the Person

This principle is opposed to all forms of collectivism. It sets limits for state intervention and aims to protect the dignity of the person and the role of the family and local associations (CCC 1883).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is subsidiarity important? It ensures that the state does not become an all-encompassing power that crushes individual initiative (CCC 1883).
