Canon Law
The body of laws and regulations made by the Church for its governance and the salvation of souls.
Canon Law (Codex Iuris Canonici) is the legal system of the Catholic Church that provides the norms for its life, sacraments, and governance (CCC 1635). Its ultimate purpose is always the salus animarum—the salvation of souls.
Ecclesiastical Order
Canon Law helps to protect the rights of the faithful, maintain order within the hierarchy, and ensure that the Church's mission is carried out in justice and charity (CCC 1635, 2033-2035).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Canon Law the same as the Ten Commandments? No. The Commandments are divine law; Canon Law is ecclesiastical law, though it is based on and must respect the divine and natural law (CCC 1951-1953).
