Canonization
Canonization is the solemn act by which the Pope definitively declares that a deceased person is a saint and is in heaven with God.
By canonizing some of the faithful, i.e., by solemnly proclaiming that they practiced heroic virtue and lived in fidelity to God's grace, the Church recognizes the power of the Spirit of holiness within her and sustains the hope of believers by proposing the saints to them as models and intercessors (CCC 828).
Process of Canonization
The process involves a rigorous investigation into the candidate's life, writings, and reputation for holiness, and usually requires the verification of miracles attributed to their intercession (CCC 828).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does canonization make someone a saint? No. Canonization is the official recognition of the fact that the person is already a saint in heaven.
