Exodus
The Exodus is God's great liberation of Israel from slavery in Egypt — the defining event of the Old Covenant and a type of the redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ.
The Exodus is the great liberating event of the Old Testament — God's deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses. It is the defining event of Israel's identity and a type of the redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ (CCC 62, 1221).
The Historical Event
The Exodus encompasses: the ten plagues sent upon Egypt; the Passover night when God struck the firstborn and the Israelites were spared by the blood of the lamb; the parting of the Red Sea; the forty years of wandering in the desert; the giving of the Law at Sinai; and the entry into the Promised Land under Joshua. The entire sequence is God's redemptive action on behalf of his people (CCC 62).
The Exodus as Typology
The Church reads the Exodus as a type of Christian redemption: Egypt is a type of slavery to sin; the Passover lamb is a type of Christ; the crossing of the Red Sea is a type of Baptism (1 Corinthians 10:1–2); manna is a type of the Eucharist (John 6:31–35); the Promised Land is a type of Heaven. The New Testament repeatedly draws on Exodus imagery to explain what Christ accomplished (CCC 1094, 1221).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Exodus historically verified? The Exodus is foundational to the Catholic faith as a real historical event. Archaeological evidence for it is debated among scholars, but the Church affirms the historical reality of Israel's liberation from Egypt as the basis of their covenant identity. The details of dating and scale remain subjects of ongoing research.
Why is the Exodus celebrated in the liturgy? The Easter Vigil re-reads the Exodus as one of the great salvation history readings, because Easter is the new and definitive Exodus — Christ's passage from death to life, which liberates all humanity from the slavery of sin (CCC 1094).
