Exorcism
Exorcism is the public and authoritative act of the Church to protect a person or object against the power of the Evil One and to withdraw them from his dominion.
When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism (CCC 1673).
Simple and Major Exorcisms
A simple exorcism is performed during the celebration of Baptism. A major or "solemn" exorcism, directed at the expulsion of demons or liberation from demonic possession, can only be performed by a priest with the express permission of the bishop, proceeding with strict prudence (CCC 1673).
