Glorification
Glorification is the final stage of salvation — the complete transformation of body and soul into the fullness of life with God, begun at the resurrection of the dead and completed in the Beatific Vision.
Glorification is the final stage of salvation — the complete and definitive transformation of the person, body and soul, into the fullness of life with God. It encompasses the resurrection of the body at the end of time and the eternal Beatific Vision in which the redeemed see God face to face forever (CCC 1002–1003).
The Three Stages of Salvation
Catholic theology distinguishes three moments in the experience of salvation: justification (being made right with God through Baptism and faith), sanctification (growing in holiness throughout the Christian life), and glorification (the final and complete perfection of the person in God). Glorification is the eschatological fulfillment of everything that justification begins and sanctification develops (CCC 1989–2016).
Body and Soul Together
Glorification is not the soul's escape from the body but the redemption of the whole person. The resurrection of the body means that the glorified state involves both soul and body — the same body that lived in this life, raised and transformed to share in Christ's own risen glory. Paul describes this transformed body as a "spiritual body" (1 Corinthians 15:44) — real, personal, and glorious (CCC 999–1001).
Glorification as Divinization
The Eastern theological tradition especially emphasizes glorification as theosis (divinization) — the participation of the human person in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). The Catechism affirms this: God became man so that man might "become God" — not in nature but in participation, sharing God's life and blessedness forever (CCC 460).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is glorification the same as Heaven? Glorification encompasses the whole final state — the Beatific Vision for the soul now, and the full glorification of soul and body together after the resurrection at the Last Day. Heaven in its fullness — the new heaven and new earth — awaits the resurrection (CCC 1042–1050).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
