Godparent

A godparent is a confirmed, practicing Catholic chosen to assist a newly baptized person in their Christian life and spiritual growth.

A godparent (or sponsor) is a mature, practicing Catholic who presents a candidate for Baptism or Confirmation and commits to helping them live a fully Christian life. For infant baptism, the godparent assists the parents in their duty to raise the child in the faith (CCC 1255).

Requirements and Role

Because the role is fundamentally a spiritual one, the Church requires that a godparent be a confirmed Catholic who leads a life of faith in harmony with the Church's teachings. They serve as a mentor, prayer warrior, and living example of the Gospel for the baptized (CCC 1255).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
