Gehenna

The term used by Jesus to describe the place of eternal punishment (Hell) for those who reject God.

Gehenna is the name of a valley outside Jerusalem (Hinnom) used as a metaphor for the state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed (CCC 1033-1035). It is the 'eternal fire' prepared for the devil and his angels (CCC 1034).

The Reality of Hell

The Church teaches that Hell exists and that its chief punishment is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can have the life and happiness for which he was created (CCC 1035).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does God send people to Hell? God predestines no one to go to hell; for this, a willful turning away from God is necessary, and persistence in it until the end (CCC 1037).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
