Martin Luther

Martin Luther was a 16th-century German monk and theologian whose protest against Church practices led to the Protestant Reformation.

Martin Luther was the central figure of the Protestant Reformation in the early 16th century. While he initially sought to reform the Church, his theological views on justification, the sacraments, and the authority of the Pope led to a break with the Catholic Church.

The Response of Trent

In response to the challenges raised by Luther and other reformers, the Church convened the Council of Trent (1545-1563) to clarify Catholic dogma and initiate a period of internal renewal (CCC 1989).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Catholic view of Luther today? While the Church remains divided from the communities that follow Luther's theology, the modern ecumenical movement seeks to find common ground in Christ while acknowledging the historical and theological differences (CCC 817-822).
