Matrimony
Matrimony is the sacrament of marriage, a covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life.
The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament (CCC 1601).
Unity and Indissolubility
The essential properties of marriage are unity and indissolubility, which in Christian marriage obtain a special firmness by reason of the sacrament (CCC 1644-1645). Marriage is based on the consent of the contracting parties, that is, on their will to give themselves, each to the other, mutually and definitively (CCC 1625-1626).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can marriage be ended? A ratified and consummated marriage between the baptized can never be dissolved. The bond resulting from the free human act of the spouses and their consummation of the marriage is a reality, henceforth irrevocable (CCC 1640).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
