Merit
Merit is the right to a reward from God for good works performed with the help of His grace.
With regard to God, there is no strict right to any merit on the part of man. Between God and us there is an immeasurable inequality (CCC 2007). However, God has willed to associate us with His work of grace, so that our good works, done in Christ, truly deserve a reward (CCC 2008).
Grace and Reward
The merit of man before God in the Christian life arises from the fact that God has freely chosen to associate man with the work of His grace (CCC 2008). No one can merit the initial grace of forgiveness and justification (CCC 2010).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we merit heaven? Yes, but only through the grace of Christ acting in us. Our 'merit' is primarily God's gift (CCC 2009).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
