Papal Infallibility

Papal infallibility is the dogma that the Pope is preserved from error when solemnly defining a doctrine of faith or morals.

Christ conferred on the Church a share in His own infallibility to preserve the purity of faith (CCC 889). The Pope enjoys this in virtue of his office (CCC 891).

Ex Cathedra

This applies only when the Pope proclaims by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals (CCC 891).
