Particular Judgment

The particular judgment is the individual reckoning each soul faces immediately at death — the personal encounter with God that determines whether the soul goes to Heaven, Purgatory, or Hell.

The particular judgment is the individual reckoning each soul faces immediately at the moment of death — a personal and immediate encounter with God in which the soul's eternal destiny (Heaven, Purgatory, or Hell) is determined (CCC 1021–1022).

What the Particular Judgment Is

At the moment of death, each soul is judged by God on the totality of its life — the good and the evil, the virtues and the sins, the degree of charity with which it lived. This judgment is immediate: there is no waiting period before the soul's state is determined. It is also irrevocable: the particular judgment cannot be appealed or reversed (CCC 1021–1022).

The Three Outcomes

The particular judgment results in one of three states: Heaven (for those who die perfectly purified in God's grace), Purgatory (for those who die in God's grace but still need purification), or Hell (for those who have finally and definitively chosen against God) (CCC 1022, 1033).

Relation to the Last Judgment

The particular judgment determines the individual soul's eternal destiny; the Last Judgment (General Judgment) at the end of time will make that destiny manifest to all of creation. The particular judgment is personal and private; the Last Judgment is universal and public (CCC 1038–1041).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the soul "sleep" between death and the Last Judgment? No. Catholic teaching clearly holds that the soul is immediately conscious after death and immediately faces the particular judgment. The doctrine of "soul sleep" — held by some Protestant communities — is not Catholic teaching (CCC 1021).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
