Sanctification
Sanctification is the process of being made holy through the grace of the Holy Spirit and the imitation of Christ.
Sanctification is the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer, conforming the person to the image of Christ and enabling them to participate in the life of God (CCC 1995, 2012-2016). It is a lifelong journey toward the perfection of charity (CCC 2013).
The Universal Call to Holiness
All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity. This holiness to which they are called they must, as far as they can, make every effort to attain (CCC 2013).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sanctification the same as justification? They are closely related: justification is the initial 'turning to God' and cleansing from sin, while sanctification is the ongoing growth in holiness that follows (CCC 1989-1995).
