St. Paul

St. Paul, the 'Apostle to the Gentiles,' was a former persecutor of the Church who became its greatest missionary and theologian.

St. Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus, was converted on the road to Damascus by an encounter with the Risen Christ (CCC 442, 515). He traveled throughout the Roman Empire preaching the Gospel and established many Christian communities.

The Epistles of Paul

His letters to the early churches form a major part of the New Testament and provide the foundational theology for the Church's understanding of grace, justification, and the Body of Christ (CCC 792, 1987-1995).

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Paul one of the Twelve Apostles? No. Paul was called as an apostle directly by the Risen Christ after the Ascension, but he was recognized by the Twelve as an equal in the apostolic mission (Galatians 1-2).
