St. Peter
St. Peter was the leader of the Apostles and the first Pope, the 'rock' on whom Christ built His Church.
St. Peter, originally named Simon, was chosen by Jesus to be the head of the college of the Apostles and the visible foundation of the Church's unity (CCC 552, 881). Jesus gave him the 'keys of the kingdom of heaven' (Matthew 16:19; CCC 553).
Successor of Peter
The office of Peter continues in the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, who exercises supreme and universal authority over the whole Church (CCC 882, 936).
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Peter called the 'Rock'? Because of the faith he confessed in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. On this rock of faith, Jesus promised to build His Church (CCC 424, 552).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
