Wisdom

Wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit that enables one to know the purpose and plan of God — the first and highest of the seven gifts of the Spirit, which orders all things in the light of divine truth.

Wisdom is a spiritual gift which enables one to know the purpose and plan of God — and it is listed first among the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1831). It is distinct from human intelligence or acquired knowledge: wisdom is a supernatural gift that allows the believer to perceive all things in the light of God and their ultimate end.

Wisdom as a Gift of the Holy Spirit

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit — wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — are given to Christians to make them docile to the promptings of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1845). Wisdom, as the first gift, has a governing role: it orders the other gifts and virtues by orienting them toward their final end in God.

Wisdom in Scripture

Wisdom is also the name of one of the books of the Old Testament (CCC 120). In the Hebrew tradition, wisdom (hokmah) was understood as the capacity to see and live according to the order God built into creation. The Book of Proverbs personifies Wisdom as present with God at creation (Proverbs 8:22–31). In the New Testament, Christ himself is called the Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24).

Wisdom and Prayer

The Catechism connects the gift of wisdom with contemplative prayer and the life of union with God (CCC 2654). Wisdom is not attained primarily through study but through the deepening of one's relationship with God — it is a gift that grows with holiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wisdom the same as intelligence or knowledge? No. Knowledge and understanding are separate gifts of the Holy Spirit. Wisdom is higher: it is the capacity to judge all things according to divine truth and their relationship to God as the ultimate end of all things (CCC 1831).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
