Chrism

The holy oil consecrated by the bishop for use in Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders.

Sacred Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam used to signify the gift of the Holy Spirit and the anointing into Christ's mission (CCC 1294, 1297). It is the visible sign of the invisible 'seal' of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1295-1296).

The Fragrance of Christ

The sweet-smelling balsam signifies that those anointed are called to spread the 'sweet odor of Christ' in the world (CCC 1294). It is used for the anointing of persons and the dedication of altars and churches.
