Latin Rite
The Latin Rite is the largest liturgical and canonical tradition within the Catholic Church, originating in Rome.
The Latin Rite (or Roman Rite) is the primary liturgical tradition of the Western Church (CCC 1203). While it is the most widespread, it is one of several rites in the Catholic Church, which also include various Eastern Rites (CCC 1203).
Unity in Diversity
The variety of liturgical traditions or rites, while being in communion with the See of Peter, testifies to the catholicity of the Church and the richness of the mystery of Christ (CCC 1201-1206).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Latin the only language used? No. While Latin is the official language of the rite, the Second Vatican Council allowed for the use of the vernacular (the local language) in the liturgy (CCC 1125, 1204).
