Liturgy

Liturgy is the official, public worship of the Church — the actions of Christ himself performed through the Church — centered on the Paschal Mystery of his death and resurrection.

Liturgy, in its original Greek meaning, is a "public work" or service done in the name of or on behalf of the people. Through the liturgy, Christ our High Priest continues the work of our redemption through the Church's celebration of the Paschal Mystery (CCC 1067–1069).

What Liturgy Is

The liturgy is the official, public worship of the Church — distinct from private devotion. It includes the celebration of the seven sacraments, the Liturgy of the Hours (the Church's daily prayer), and the liturgical year with its cycle of feasts and seasons. These are not human rituals only — they are the actions of Christ himself, performed through and in the Church (CCC 1069–1070).

The Paschal Mystery at the Center

Every liturgical action is a participation in the Paschal Mystery — the death and resurrection of Christ. The sacraments make the Paschal Mystery present and effective in the lives of the faithful. The liturgical year is structured so that the faithful relive the entire mystery of Christ's life, death, and resurrection each year (CCC 1085, 1168).

Active Participation

The Second Vatican Council emphasized that the faithful should participate in the liturgy "fully, consciously, and actively" — not as passive spectators but as members of the priestly people who offer the sacrifice with the priest and are transformed by it (CCC 1141).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Church have so many liturgical rules? Christ instituted the sacraments; the Church is their steward. Liturgical norms protect the integrity of what Christ entrusted to the Church and ensure that worship is genuinely offered to God rather than shaped by the preferences of any individual celebrant (CCC 1124–1125).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
