Baptism
Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation, which cleanses from original sin and makes one a child of God.
Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments (CCC 1213). Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission (CCC 1213).
The Essential Rite
The essential rite of Baptism consists in immersing the candidate in water or pouring water on his head, while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: 'I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit' (CCC 1239-1240).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Baptism necessary for salvation? The Lord Himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation (John 3:5). The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are 'reborn of water and the Spirit' (CCC 1257).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
