Gebirah

The title of the Queen Mother in the Kingdom of Judah, serving as a type of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Gebirah (Great Lady) was the mother of the reigning Davidic king who held a position of royal authority and intercession at the king's right hand (1 Kings 2:19). In Catholic typology, the Gebirah prefigures Mary's role as Queen of Heaven and earth (CCC 491, 966).

Typology of Queenship

Just as the Gebirah in the Old Testament interceded for the people before the king, Mary intercedes for the Church before her Son, the eternal King of the line of David (CCC 966, 2677).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was the mother the queen and not the wife? In ancient Near Eastern monarchies, kings often had multiple wives, but only one mother. The position of Gebirah ensured a stable and respected female figure in the court.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
