The Greatest Commandment
See Charity. Love is both a theological virtue and the greatest of all commandments. God is love (1 Jn 4:8), and the whole of Christian life flows from and returns to divine love. Christ's new commandment — to love one another as he has loved us — is the heart of Christian moral life. The two great commandments are love of God and love of neighbor (CCC 1822–1829; cf. Mt 22:37–39).
