Patron Saints
Patron saints are the special intercessors and protectors of particular people, places, occupations, and situations — chosen based on the connection between the saint's life and the group they patronize.
Patron saints are saints who are considered special intercessors or protectors for particular people, places, occupations, or situations — based on some connection between the saint's life and the group they patronize. Every Catholic is encouraged to have a patron saint; many nations, dioceses, religious orders, and professions also have patron saints (CCC 2156).
The Basis of Patronage
Patronage is not arbitrary. It typically arises from a historical connection between the saint and the group (St. Patrick for Ireland), from the circumstances of the saint's martyrdom or ministry (St. Lawrence, martyred on a grill, for cooks), from the saint's writing or work (St. Thomas Aquinas for scholars and students), or from a significant miracle or apparition (Our Lady of Guadalupe for the Americas; CCC 2683).
The Practice
Catholics take the name of a saint at Baptism (or Confirmation), adopting that saint as a patron and model. Feast days of patron saints are celebrated as special occasions. People pray to their patron saints for intercession, especially in matters related to the saint's particular area of patronage (CCC 2156).
Notable Patron Saints
St. Joseph — Universal Church, fathers, workers, happy death. St. Christopher — travelers. St. Cecilia — musicians. St. Luke — physicians and artists. St. Jude — desperate causes. St. Anthony of Padua — lost things. St. Francis of Assisi — ecology and animals. Our Lady of Guadalupe — the Americas (CCC 2156).
Frequently Asked Questions
Do patron saints have magical power over their area? No. Patron saints are intercessors — they pray to God on behalf of those who ask their help. The power is God's; the saint is a friend and advocate before God, not a divine power in their own right (CCC 2683).
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
