Pharisees

The Pharisees were a Jewish sect in the time of Jesus known for their strict adherence to the oral and written Law.

The Pharisees were a influential religious group that emphasized the outward observance of the Law and the traditions of the elders (CCC 574-576). Jesus often came into conflict with them regarding the true meaning of the Law and the priority of love (CCC 577-582).

Faithful but Challenged

While Jesus criticized the hypocrisy of some Pharisees, He also shared many of their beliefs, such as the resurrection of the dead and the existence of angels (CCC 993).

Frequently Asked Questions

Were all Pharisees bad? No. Many Pharisees were sincere in their search for God, and some, like Nicodemus and Gamaliel, were sympathetic to Jesus or the early Church (CCC 595).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
