Polygamy

Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse, which the Church teaches is contrary to the equal dignity of man and woman and the unitive nature of marriage.

Polygamy is the state of having multiple wives or husbands simultaneously. The Catholic Church teaches that polygamy is contrary to conjugal love, which by its nature is undivided and exclusive, and contrary to the equal personal dignity of men and women (CCC 1645, 2387).

Contrary to God's Plan

While polygamy was tolerated in the Old Testament, Jesus restored marriage to its original design in creation: the exclusive union of one man and one woman. Polygamy contradicts the total gift of self that sacramental marriage requires (CCC 1610, 2387).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
