Predestination
Predestination is God’s eternal plan for the salvation of all people, which includes human cooperation and freedom.
Predestination refers to God's eternal decree by which He ordains the salvation of the elect (CCC 600, 1037). Catholic teaching insists that God predestines no one to go to hell; for this, a willful turning away from God is necessary (CCC 1037).
Grace and Freedom
God includes in His plan of predestination the free response of the human person to His grace (CCC 600). Every person is called to salvation, and His grace precedes and prepares our free response (CCC 2008).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Church believe in 'Double Predestination'? No. The idea that God actively chooses some for hell before they commit any sin is rejected (CCC 1037).
