Punishment (Temporal)

Temporal punishment is the purification necessary for the disordered attachments to creatures left behind by sin, even after the eternal guilt has been forgiven.

Temporal punishment is the consequence of sin that remains even after the guilt of sin has been forgiven. While the eternal punishment of mortal sin (Hell) is remitted entirely in Confession, sin also leaves behind an unhealthy attachment to creatures that requires purification (CCC 1472).

Purification Here or Hereafter

This purification, which frees the soul from temporal punishment, can be accomplished in this life through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, works of mercy, patient endurance of suffering, and the gaining of indulgences. If it is not completed in this life, it is accomplished after death in the state called Purgatory (CCC 1472–1473).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
