Purgatory
Purgatory is the state of final purification for those who die in God's grace but are still imperfectly purified.
All who die in God's grace but still imperfectly purified are assured of salvation but undergo purification to achieve the necessary holiness for heaven (CCC 1030). The Church calls this final purification 'Purgatory' (CCC 1031).
Purifying Fire
Tradition speaks of a cleansing fire (CCC 1031). It is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.
